Mango Grilled Chicken

Tonight is a Mango Grilled Chicken sort of night. Our nights here in Austin have been just beautiful lately… We want to spend every moment we can outside. photo-2

It’s Sunday – Are You Praying For Your Pastor?

photo-2I hate to admit this … it’s very humbling in fact.  And even takes courage on my part to ‘put it out there’.  I was raised in a church that did a GREAT job of teaching me that daily time with Jesus (a ‘quiet time’ as we called it) was vitally important to a growing spiritual life.  I’m so glad I was taught that because it is true.  Sometimes you want to read scripture and pray, sometimes you don’t, but none the less … doing it daily is vital if you want to have a growing relationship with God.  Since I did my best to do that every day of the week, I somehow told myself that Sundays were ‘break’ days.  Since I was about to get up and go to church, I didn’t need to have a quiet time that morning.  No one ever told me to believe that or do that, somehow, I just thought it was okay to skip my quiet time on Sundays because I was going to church that day.

THAT IS SOOOOOO NOT TRUE!  Listen to this …  More

A Mommy’s Time With Jesus

So every morning I try to spend time with jesus.  For me, this is just a time of prayer (confession, repentance, surrendering my heart and plans to His will, etc.) and reading scripture.  I have really had some stuff on my heart lately.  I’d been wanting to take some time and ‘get it all out’ in prayer with God.  I do that by journaling.  Here is what my journal was from late last week: (I’ve omitted some details that don’t need to be ‘out there’ just yet!) Still … you’ll get the gist:  More

Life and Love

Life-and-Love-by-Holley-Gerth-300x300I have recently started following Holley Gerth and I love, love her style, her encouragement and her daily blog.  Since we are writing about love this month, I wanted to share this image recently posted by Holley.  I truly believe God has created us to share love as well as receive it.  God is Love and we are created in His image.  So join me this month in being intentional in your love.  How do you share it in your life?

Show your love through … Blueberry Muffins

So we’re talking about how to show your love to others this February season.  It’s an easy thing to do … It just takes some intentionality and a bit of effort.  One of the ways I show that I love my children is to make them special things that they like.  My daughter loves these blueberry muffins.  I haven’t made them in a while and she’s been asking for them, so what a better way for me to show her that I love her and I’m listening to her than to make them for her.  They are super easy and very delicious.  I wanted to share the recipe with you today.  My variations, although few, are in parenthesis. Clean Ten-A Saving Grace for Parenting

Have I told you about Clean 10?  I got the idea years ago from a random blog I read once.  Maybe I found it on Pinterest? I really have no idea.  I would give credit where credit is due, but I really can’t remember where I learned about it! I do know I tried it once, shortly after reading about it and it revolutionized the fighting, whining, crying, awful-ness that A.L.W.A.Y.S. comes after telling my children that it is time for them to clean their rooms.   More

Cedar Fever

Cedar Fever.  Have you ever heard of it?  If you’ve been around the Central Texas area during December – February-ish time, surely you have.  You see, we’re inundated with these beautifully green Cedar trees.   Amidst the deadness of winter, there is always the beautiful green of a Cedar Tree.  This is a small interesting article about Cedar Fever.  If you have a minute, go read it.  It’s written well; not just from a medical perspective … but from a personal one as well.  And she hits the nail on the head.

“But cedar fever is not just any allergy. It’s a scourge”  2nd paragraph, 1st sentence.

I completely agree.  Cedar Fever — FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER — has stricken me with its death.  Michael and the kids only have minor allergy problems right now, and I’m truly thankful for that.  I don’t want anyone to feel like I’ve felt.  My symptoms?  Body aches, chills, sore throat, sinus pressure {so much so my teeth hurt and I can’t open my mouth fully}, headache, lost voice, a stopped up nose and a constantly drippy runny nose … all at the same time and all with no fever.  As many times as I take it, there’s no fever.

Check out this video someone in Austin took from his balcony as he overlooked the Hills.  Y’ALL!!!! That is craziness.  All the Cedar Pollen just floating off into the sky.  Craziness, I tell you. *Craziness*.

I write this post to let all of you Austinites know … I sympathize with you.  I do.  I understand that feeling of exhaustion you get, you know, from just opening your eyes in the morning.  Yes. Just waking up is exhausting.  Anything you do is exhausting.  Yet, when you try to get a full nights sleep, it’s a crap shoot.  Maybe you will, maybe you won’t?!?! Will you be stopped up so much that you can’t even sleep? Maybe.  Will you snore so loud that you sound like Darth Vader and actually wake yourself up from it?!?!   Maybe. Will your KIDS actually be disgusted by all the snot and mucus coming out of YOUR nose?!?!  Maybe.  Any and all of these might actually be possible.  {um, I’d like to say none of this is pulled from personal experience, but I’d be lying.  It’s been a rough week.  Sorry, kids, for all the mucus. And most of all, I’m so sorry, Michael, that you have to actually share a bed with me in this condition.  I thought 3rd trimester pregnancy was bad!}.

Thus far, it’s been killing me.  But as of last night, I’ve found a special concoction of regular allergy and allergy-D medicine, along with occasional ibuprofen for the body aches and so far … I’m killing it.  At least for the past 15 hours.  We’ll see how the rest of the next 4-5 weeks go.  Here’s hoping for the best.  What are you doing to ward off the evil that is cedar pollen this time of year?

It’s A 3 Day Weekend!!!

And you know what? I couldn’t be more excited.  For a few reasons …

1. I’ve been struggling with Cedar Fever … more on that later … and I can’t wait to just rest. and enjoy.

2. I get to rest and enjoy!  yay!

3. I get to be with my family!  yay!! These guys can be super fun!

2013-12-25 05.34.49

So what are you going to do with your day?  We’ll do a bit of everything.  Some normal stuff: cleaning up, laundry, intersecting fights and bickering with {what we always hope is} gospel-filled, truth centered conversation.  That’s the hope at least.  And we’ll do some fun weekend stuff … watch some football, play games, watch a movie, go to a UT swim meet.  And we’ll rest up, of course.

Although I’m feeling better this morning {God has graciously provided relief from Cedar Fever with a careful concoction of Allergy-D Meds, water and lots of kleenex}, I’m still going to avoid time outside like the plague.  Indoor fun is what I’m clinging to on this longer weekend.

So join me,will you, in being intentional about bringing love and enjoyment into your weekend … be it a 1, 2, or 3 day one. 🙂

What Do You Do In The Morning?

Besides just trying to wake up and get out of bed, there are things I’m trying to do in the morning. One of those things is to focus my heart. It’s not that something weird happens when I sleep and I go all crazy, but that I just need re-focusing, on what matters, daily. So, what is it that matters? Let me tell you…

1. My heart and where it’s at with God. I need to read truth–scripture–to train my mind to believe all things true and think like that instead of thinking all the other crazy thinks my mind tends towards!!!

Honestly, that’s the only thing I really try to make sure happens. All other patterns of thinking stem from that and all other necessities {or perceived ones, like coffee:) } will happen automatically.

What are you trying to get done in the morning? Are you trying to refocus your heart on what’s important? How do you do that?

A Beautiful Autumn in Austin…Part 2

I just have to follow-up on yesterday’s post.  I had the opportunity to go to Austin a few days in November and babysit my two grandchildren.  It was so fun and I experienced first had the colorful trees.  We live a little north of Dallas and we too had an unusually beautiful fall.  It was just about as pretty as it gets for Texas.  Anyway, while in Austin, I took a few adorable pictures of my grandchildren playing in the leaves and I just had to share them. enjoy!
