The Father Comforts … all by Himself

One recent Sunday I so badly wanted someone to know the hardness of what I was talking to God about; the topic will remain unnamed, but I just wanted people to know.

I’m sitting there.   More

Holy Week Wednesday

2013-08-15 06.50.41Googling “Holy Week Timeline” is awesome b/c you get a great feed of exactly that. has a lovely link that includes side-by-side comparisons of day/night cycles of the Jewish culture, with Galilean Jews and our modern cultures day/night cycles.

Wednesday is apparently a ‘silent day’ as there is no record of anything said or done by Jesus.  The site very well states “No record in the Gospels, but much activity {was going on} as Jesus prepares for Last Supper and as Judas and Sanhedrin prepare for Jesus’ arrest”.

A Silent Day.

What would it be like if we spent the day in silent, reflecting on what had already happened that passion week and what was going to happen in the days to come? Maybe you can’t actually be silent all day today, but what if our hearts, minds, thoughts and prayers were all pointed in that direction?

John 16: 13-14 speaks about the Holy Spirit being the “Spirit of Truth”. That “He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak”.  Jesus says the Holy Spirit “will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and disclose it to you”.  Wow.  Is it really that simple?  Us being silent … prayerful … asking … and being reliant upon the Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth, revealing Jesus to us?

Join that journey with me today.  One of silent reliance on the Holy Spirit to draw our hearts in to our Father God by revealing what this ‘Silent Day’ must have been like for Jesus amidst the Holy Week.

IMG_0912Do you celebrate things at your house?  We try to.  Things big and little — holidays, meeting/reaching goals from potty training to degrees being earned.  We celebrate values and goals all things physical, spiritual and emotional.  It’s a fun way to turn your heart to thanksgiving.  I don’t know about you, but I often remember the bad, hard and negative, but I really have to work at celebrating and marking the good.  Last year we implemented a “Memory Jar”.  For us, it’s as simple as you see here.  I found the idea on Pinterest last year.  As things happen, I jot them down on a sheet of paper and throw it in there.  At church this week talked about how good it is to celebrate; you can take a quick listen here.  I’d love to hear how and what you celebrate on a regular (or not so regular) basis!

Welcome to Summer!

photo 1Well, summer is officially here for us. Today was the last day of school for the kiddos.  Nothing could be sweeter to them!!!

As a mom, I wanted to do something to make their ‘entry’ into summer a bit special, but I’ve been short on time and creativity lately.  I remember seeing this on Pinterest … I’m sure I even have it pinned somewhere, but it came to mind … it’s easy and doable and I think it will help communicate my excitement for summer to my kiddos!

The green is just poster board that I cut in wavy lines because it’s cute and mostly because I can’t cut a straight line!!! My original thought was to paint it, but I was short on time so I just used one of those big fat black permanent markers. I threw down some candy and sparklers and viola!

Here’s how my children responded when they got home … I’d say they were excited!

What do you do to celebrate things with your children?

Mango Grilled Chicken

Tonight is a Mango Grilled Chicken sort of night. Our nights here in Austin have been just beautiful lately… We want to spend every moment we can outside. photo-2

So What About All The Bunnies, Chicks, Eggs and Peeps?

Well, honestly, I don’t know. I grew up with bunnies, chicks and eggs at Easter. They bring back good memories. I had a really easy time believing in Santa Claus as a child. That was totally believable to me. But the Easter Bunny … now we’re stretching it a bit! Isn’t that funny?! I totally believed in a jolly fat guy who delivered gifts, via flying reindeer, to all children in one night, but a magical life-sized bunny painting eggs for children … no way.

My mom always did a GREAT job of making every season and holiday something special. We celebrated it and decorated the house for it. I tend to do the same thing. I like wreaths and outside décor for seasons and holidays. I have cute spring and Easter decorations that I enjoy. I have dishtowels with eggs and chicks on them. We dye eggs every Easter with the kids and have an egg hunt. That’s always fun … a tradition we all enjoy.

But this year I’m rethinking it all a bit …

Not because it’s bad or evil. Not because I want to be different than everyone else. I’m rethinking it all because God has caused my heart to pause. As Valentine’s Day came to a close and I took down my heart-shaped red décor, I started thinking about my Easter décor and when I was going to decorate. It was then that I felt the Holy Spirit create a small tension inside of me about it all. Did you know that’s how God speaks to us? There’s a beautiful story about it in 1 Kings 19. Elijah was instructed to go and stand on a mountain before the Lord. He was trying to hear from God. There were all these things that happened that made loud noises – a strong wind, an earthquake, a fire – but scripture says “and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing” 1 Kings 19:12.

Y’all — that was the Lord. That was Him speaking to Elijah. You see, I try to spend time in scripture, prayer, confession and surrender daily JUST FOR MOMENTS LIKE THESE!!!! How exciting it is to have moments of quietness where you are discerning that the Lord is asking you to take pause and think about something.

So that’s what I’m doing. I’m reading about it. I’m praying about it. I’m talking to my husband about it. I’m processing with my children about it. I’m NOT throwing the baby out with the bath water and throwing all my Easter decorations away. I have them around my house now. Cute little Eggs on my mantel and chick towels in my bathroom. I’m holding it all with an open hand and asking Jesus to guide Michael, me and our family through it. What is He calling us to do? Why are we doing what we’re currently doing?

This Lenten season, I ask you just to pause and think about why you are doing what your doing. When you do that … ask God to show you what HE wants you to do. Ask Him to speak to you, just as He did to Elijah, and give you a heart that discerns His voice. Pray with faith … expecting Him to speak to you. And then let me know about it…I’d love to hear how God is speaking to you!

Show your love through … Blueberry Muffins

So we’re talking about how to show your love to others this February season.  It’s an easy thing to do … It just takes some intentionality and a bit of effort.  One of the ways I show that I love my children is to make them special things that they like.  My daughter loves these blueberry muffins.  I haven’t made them in a while and she’s been asking for them, so what a better way for me to show her that I love her and I’m listening to her than to make them for her.  They are super easy and very delicious.  I wanted to share the recipe with you today.  My variations, although few, are in parenthesis. “The great thing about getting older is that you don’t lose all the other ages you’ve been.” Madeleine L’Engle

I love this quote.  We have a very special birthday in our family later this month.  It’s one of those birthday’s that end with a zero, you know, one of the “Big Ones”.  The special day just happens to belong to More

It’s A 3 Day Weekend!!!

And you know what? I couldn’t be more excited.  For a few reasons …

1. I’ve been struggling with Cedar Fever … more on that later … and I can’t wait to just rest. and enjoy.

2. I get to rest and enjoy!  yay!

3. I get to be with my family!  yay!! These guys can be super fun!

So what are you going to do with your day?  We’ll do a bit of everything.  Some normal stuff: cleaning up, laundry, intersecting fights and bickering with {what we always hope is} gospel-filled, truth centered conversation.  That’s the hope at least.  And we’ll do some fun weekend stuff … watch some football, play games, watch a movie, go to a UT swim meet.  And we’ll rest up, of course.

Although I’m feeling better this morning {God has graciously provided relief from Cedar Fever with a careful concoction of Allergy-D Meds, water and lots of kleenex}, I’m still going to avoid time outside like the plague.  Indoor fun is what I’m clinging to on this longer weekend.

So join me,will you, in being intentional about bringing love and enjoyment into your weekend … be it a 1, 2, or 3 day one. 🙂
