Lent, Ash Wednesday & Easter

Did you grow up celebrating Lent?  I never did.  I’m guessing it was only because I was not in a church that did.  I did grow up going to church though, and still do.  My faith is very important to me.  I’m a 100% believer in Jeremiah 17:9:

“The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?” Jeremiah 17:9 NAS

My heart is sick.  It’s in a dead-end situation and in need of a Savior.  I also believe 100% in Romans 6:23 and Romans 10:9:

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” Romans 6:23 NAS

“That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.” Romans 10:9

All that being said … I need Jesus.  Scripture says I do and I know it.  I need Him to do a good work in and through me on a minute-by-minute basis, every day of my life.  Christmas and Easter are two Christian holidays I don’t take lightly.  Without Jesus being born, I’d never have the hope of salvation and the redemption of my soul.  Without Easter & the celebration of Holy Week (Jesus’s Triumphant Entry, Death, Burial and Resurrection) I would not have that salvation that I so dearly cling to.

Easter is a good ways away still.  In fact just yesterday my youngest was complaining that grocery store we were in had all their Easter stuff  out and ‘it’s  soooo far away, still’!  But somewhere about mid-February I started thinking more about Easter.  I started thinking about Lent, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and what all that meant.  I felt God nudging me to put more thought into it.  To think about what I did and why I did it.  Why do so many celebrate Lent?  Why have I never done it?  Why are bunnies and chicks and eggs part of Easter? How did all that happen? What about fasting? Should I do that?  I’ll stop there … you get the point!  So I’m embarking on a series on Lent, Easter and the like.  I’ll let you know what God’s been stirring in my heart and how I’m responding to it all.  Will you embark on this journey with me?

Did you grow up celebrating Lent? What did it look like for you?

Hey Holly, this is great! I am excited for these series. Although I was brought up Catholic, my family never officially observed this season. I am currently trying to learn more about Lent, Easter and all that. I look forward to your posts! 😉 Blessings, Gabby
