Camping at McKinney Falls State Park

It’s a nice Sunday afternoon.  We ate lunch, we were all on the couch finishing off a family movie.  I’ve drifted off for about 30 minutes or so and was just coming to when my husband tapped me on the shoulder and said ‘Hey!’  ‘Want to go camping tonight?!’

Y’all the excitement was evident.  We were trying to speak softly so our 8 & 5 year old’s didn’t catch on to what we were talking about.  We were still deciding what we were going to do.  My husband was all over it.  He was excited.  Here’s where my mind went:

  • It’s going to be freezing.  Unlike the amazing Texas weather we’ve been having, tonight’s low was going to be 32 degrees.
  • Oh, the laundry.  I can give you all the excuses in the world as to why I didn’t want to have to do camping laundry, but the fact of the matter is: There will be a lot of laundry.
  • The drive.  It was already 2pm.  We’d have to pack up, then drive there.  And if we don’t get a fire built before dark, it’s REALLY going to be freezing.
  • Um, I’m tired and just kind of want to lay here all day.

How fun of a Mom am I?!?!  I do Love to do fun things … when I’m prepared.  That’s a downfall of mine.  When it’s not in my plan, it’s hard for me to change and get on board.  It only took about 10 minutes, then I was on board!

To my surprise, Michael had found McKinney Falls State Park.  It is only about 30 minutes from our house.  And it’s awesome!!!!

McKinney FallsThis is at the Upper Falls.  There are lower ones too, but we didn’t go to those.

Butterfly 2We saw some awesome nature while there … including this little guy.  I wish we’d gotten a picture of the cardinal that visited us at camp.  He was so beautiful.

This is our new tent.  Something happened to our original one that we’d had since we got married.  I can’t remember what, but we were in need of a new one.  Craigslist came through for us on that one.  A great tent at an even better price!

And of course, the best part of camping … Smore’s. Notice the graham cracker and chocolate in waiting.  It’s warming on the grill grate as the other marshmallow is being roasted to perfection.  It’s the Dennis way for Smore’s.  Really, the best Smore’s ever.

Marshmallow Forest

My oldest made a Marshmallow Forest.  She loves Smore’s.  So much, in fact, that she built her whole 8th birthday around that one dessert.

We had a great time.  Do you ever go camping with your family?  Where is your favorite place to go?
