A head-butting problem

So this is an oldie, but a goodie ! … I originally posted this in July of 2010.  I’d like to tell you, now that my oldest is 8, that it’s all great and we never butt-heads anymore, but alas, I cannot!  I can tell you that God is uber gracious to always unite our hearts and allow us to connect on that heart-level.

Original Post:

My oldest and I can butt heads!  It’s gotten better as she has gotten older, but I think the height of our ‘head butting’ was when she was about 3-3 ½ years old. During that time, it literally seemed like we just could not get along.  It made my heart sad!  Then I ran across this …

Proverbs 23:26 says “Give me your heart, my son, and let your eyes delight in my ways.”  There is a huge benefit to having someone’s ‘heart’…they listen to you and take in what you say.  When K and I were not butting heads … I believe I had her heart.  She would trust me and love me and surrender herself to me in that moment.  I had her heart.  I was able to truly guide her, in love, and help her see her life, her choices and her decisions in a very real way. Times like that are amazing!  So fun … so sweet and so prosperous.

I pray this verse a lot.  I prayed it a lot back then and still do now.  I pray that the Lord will allow grace in our relationship … for her to give her heart to me daily, moment by moment as we live life together.  I believe that praying this verse, consistently, over the past few years and me trying to relate to her heart, instead of just trying to get her external behavior to change has GREATLY helped our relationship.  There is much less head-butting … much more love and times of enjoyment.  I do praise God for showing this scripture to me and creating a different type of relationship between K and I … it’s been fabulous!!!

I hadn’t read that verse before but I’m putting it on my memorization list. That is really helpful as I have a very strong-willed three year old I’m contending with at the moment. This reminds me of another blog post I read just yesterday about tying and cutting heartstrings with our kids, and I will put the link at the end of this comment. Thanks so much for sharing, love your blog!
