School Supplies

Oh my gosh!!! I was looking at the Target Store weekly ad today and it dawned on me — I’m going to have a Kindergardener!  K is getting so big and she will be going to school … with a big girl back pack and school supplies and her whole self walking into that big school and WOW!!!!!  It’s almost too much to take in.

School supplies, in and of themselves, are one of my favorite things.  The purity of a package of clean white paper … the smell of new crayons … the potential a new pad of construction paper has.  As an adult, I still love school supplies and office supplies … post-its, colored fun paper clips, colored sharpies … i love it!

I almost see my daughter like that now.  So new and fresh and open to potential … and going off to school is scary because she is now going to be tainted by the world!!!!  As dramatic as that sounds, the reality is that she is already tainted …right?  Biblically, she is ‘dead in her transgressions and sins’ (Ephesians 2:1 and Romans 3:23).  She’s been that way since the minute all her preciousness entered this world.  But the last 5, almost 6 years I have been able to be at home with her; to be near when bad things happen.  Her filter for what is good and right and for justice and peace in the world has been Michael and I.  The problem is, it shouldn’t be us!  Her filter for which she should run everything through should be scripture … God’s word.  So over the past years, we’ve been trying to teach her a biblical world view.  Do we fall short? yes! many times!  But we also aren’t done yet.  Just because I won’t be with her most every waking minute of her day come August 23, 2010, doesn’t mean that she won’t be cared for.  God so graciously shows us in Psalm 139 that He knows us better than anyone and that He is ‘intimately acquainted with all our ways’.  There is no one better to care for her heart and soul! … and that is true whether I’m there or not.

So there’s the Truth on the situation … but what do I do now?  Well, now I trust.  I have faith.  I lean into His words, trusting Him that He will care for her far better than I ever could.  I pray hard and earnestly for her and trust that she will talk to me and Michael and that the Lord, who ‘is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness’ (Psalm 145:8) will show me what we need to engage her heart about.

Any others of you have thoughts or fears even for your kiddos who are going to or are in school?

We got our teacher assignments in the mail yesterday along with a packet of information and it opened up a whole new world of fears, hopes, anticipation. You are SO right that all we can do is trust God to watch over them and guide us in training their little hearts. THANKS for your thoughts and insight! It’s right where I am right now. 🙂

It is an amazing time of year. My little on will go to Kindergarten next year, but I still stock up on school supplies at this time of year. We use the school supplies for so many activities through out the year. Good luck!
